On the final day of the National Hockey League draft, the Red Wings focused on forward line players. In the second round, they took Dylan James, who was rookie of the year in the United States Hockey League, and Dmitri Buchelnikov, an 18-year-old high-scoring Russian. There’s a bit of risk there, because, with the current political climate, the ability of Russian players to come to the United States is in question. James is slated to play college hockey at North Dakota next season.
Detroit traded its third-round pick to the Blues for negotiating rights to pending free agent goaltender Ville Husso, who then signed a three-year deal with the Wings. Husso is expected to share time with Alex Nedeljkovic next season. The move makes it unlikely that the club will sign its own free agent goalie, Thomas Greiss.
Detroit continued its focus on offense through the remaining rounds, taking only one defenseman.
MLB
The Tigers spotted the White Sox an early lead, roared back, then held off Chicago for a 7-5 victory last evening. Tarik Skubal gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, then held the Sox at bay through six. Jeimer Candelario’s two-run shot tied the contest in the top of the sixth. They added four in the seventh, with help from a two-run Javier Báez double, then scratched out an insurance run in the eighth. Chicago responded with three off Jason Foley in the bottom of the eighth, but Tyler Alexander and Michael Fulmer came in to complete the game.
The Tigers have won six straight, and visit the Sox again this afternoon. Rookie Garrett Hill will pitch against Johnny Cueto. Coverage will begin at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Miguel Cabrera is heading to his 12th Major League All-Star Game. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced yesterday that the Tigers’ legend will be added to the roster as an “All-Star Legends Selection.” Albert Pujols of the Cardinals was awarded a similar honor for the National League.
The Brewers edged the Pirates 4-3 last night. Aaron Ashby gave up two runs over five innings. Willy Adames homered, and threw out a runner at the plate to end the game, after Pittsburgh had already scored once in the top of the ninth.
The Brewers host the Pirates again this afternoon. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Zach Thompson.
Guts Frisbee
The 64th annual Coca Cola International Frisbee Tournament opens this morning at the Driving Park. Some of the best Guts Frisbee teams in the world will compete for the coveted Nachazel Cup. Preliminary rounds continue through the day. Play resumes tomorrow at 9:00, with the championship match scheduled for late afternoon. Spectators are welcome.
The Boomtown Saints, who won their eighth IFT championship last year, will be back to defend their title. Hancock’s Shottle Bop team will be a strong contender. Other local teams competing include Gino’s American Pie, Monte Carlo, and Dolly’s L & L. A half dozen Marquette teams will give this year’s tourney a strong regional presence.
