Non-Union Houghton City Employees Receive Raises

Most non-union Houghton city employees will receive three percent raises for the new fiscal year.

The city council approved the increases at last night’s meeting.

City Manager Eric Waara confirmed that yesterday’s planned visit by the Viking cruise ship Octantis had to be scrubbed because of weather concerns. The ship’s captain determined it would be too difficult to navigate into the Portage Canal in dense fog. There were additional concerns about safely taxiing passengers to shore and back from the ship’s anchorage near Dollar Bay. It’s the second time the Octantis has been unable to bring its passengers to the Copper Country. The next visit is set for late July.

After a public hearing, the council adopted changes to the Downtown Development Authority Plan, to include the upcoming demolition of the big parking deck, and redevelopment of the property.
