Juhannus Celebration Heads to Conclusion

Juhannus concludes this weekend.

The Finnish-themed summer celebration will feature a traditional dance tonight. Visiting violinist Sara Pajunen will join the local Thimbleberry Band to provide music beginning at 7:30 at the Finnish American Heritage Center.

Northwind Books will host a Juhannus Market today between 10:00 and 4:00, and tomorrow between 10:00 and 1:00.

Tomorrow, Finnish American Folk School instructors will demonstrate traditional arts between 10:00 and noon at Quincy Green. Clare Zuraw from the Folk School tells us it’s free…

We’re going to have a nice little group of instructors and students from the Folk School on Quincy Green under some tents demonstrating some of what we do. We’ll have some weavers, probably some spinning. We may have some metal and woodwork displayed, if not being demonstrated.

Zuraw says Junannus will conclude tomorrow night with a tradition that goes back more than a century…

Every year for more than a hundred years. the fire department in Toivola has been lighting a kokko on the beach.

The huge bonfire will be lit around 9:00 at Agate Beach, and the public is invited.
