The competition is heating up as Calumet and Houghton continue to build their cases why they should be named Hockeyville USA.
Members of the community and students from CLK schools gathered in front of the Calumet Colosseum yesterday for a photo…part of the application process for the Kraft sponsored contest.
The students then broke out into the Calumet school fight song—and you can see video of this on the Keweenaw Report Facebook page.
Calumet Hockey Association Board Member John Carroll explains why he hopes Calumet wins the prize, which includes $150,000 for rink improvements and hosting an NHL preseason game in the area.
Carroll said, “We have a plan in place to replace our boards and glass which are in dire need of replacement. The community the last couple years has been really great supporting us as far as getting a new ice plant, getting the new Zamboni and now this is just kind of the last thing we need.”
To keep pace with Calumet, Houghton will need a huge turnout tonight at the PACK the DEE event at 6pm.
The public is encouraged to show up in hockey jerseys for a group photo that will be used in their application.
Nominations are still needed for both rinks at www.krafthockeyville.com.
