Kytta, Monahan Win Markham 5k – Saturday Sports Wrap

Running

At the Thatcher Markham Memorial 5k Run last night…
• Kolson Kytta of Chassell claimed the men’s title, finishing 15 seconds ahead of Hancock’s Nik Thomas.
• Kristen Monahan of Houghton won the women’s crown, nearly two minutes ahead of Houghton’s Kristina Owen.

High School

The 36th U.P. All-Star Classic basketball game will be played today in Saint Ignace.

Local boys players include Mr. U.P. Basketball Jaden Borseth from Ewen-Trout Creek, along with Panthers teammates Eric Abramson, Kelsey Jilek, Brendan Polkky and Brad Besonen. John Schutz from Jeffers and Marcus Sutherland from Lake Linden-Hubbell will also play for the West team.

Local girls players include Miss U.P. Basketball Reide Osterman from Baraga, along with Jana Loukus and Marybeth Halonen from Calumet, and Paige Sleeman from Houghton. Tyler Larson of the Vikings will coach the North team.

College Hockey

The Northern Michigan University hockey team has added four new transfer players.
• Artem Shlaine is a Russian-American center who played two seasons at the University of Connecticut.
• Simon Kjellberg is a Swedish defenseman who played 75 games for Rensselaer Polytechnic.
• Kristof Papp is a forward from Hungary who skated in 59 games for Michigan State.
• Aiden Gallacher is from Rochester Hills. He played in 58 games for MSU.

NHL

The Stanley Cup championship series continues tonight, as the Avalanche host the Lightning. Colorado leads the series 1-0.

MLB

The Tigers’ bats were quiet again last night in a 7-0 loss to the Rangers. Tarik Skubal gave up three runs before recording his first out. He struggled through five frames, allowed five runs, and took the loss. Willi Castro had two of Detroit’s five hits.

The Tigers host the Rangers again today. Rony Garcia will pitch against Taylor Hearn. Coverage will begin at 3:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Heralded outfield prospect Riley Greene will make his debut for Detroit today. He’s been on the injured list all season, recovering from a broken foot.

The Brewers edged the Reds 5-4 last evening. Eric Lauer pitched into the seventh, gave up all four Cincinnati runs, and earned the win. Hunter Renfroe, Willy Adames and Keston Hirua homered.

The Brewers visit the Reds again this afternoon. Jason Alexander will start against Graham Ashcraft.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers have released quarterback Kurt Benkert. Benkert spent the 2021 season on the practice squad, although he did appear in one game as a COVID-19 replacement.
