Bridgefest Returns Today

Bridgefest opens today in Houghton and Hancock.

After a two-year pause because of COVID-19 pandemic concerns, the celebration of the two cities, and the single, historic bridge that links them, returns with a full schedule of events.

Activities begin this morning, with a ceremony acknowledging the Houghton-Hancock Bridge’s recognition as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers. That begins at 10:00 at Bridgeview Park in Houghton.

Kids can make their own bridges at an engineering camp starting at 11:00 at Porvoo Park in Hancock. Hot dogs, chips and pop are available for purchase at the park between 11:00 and 2:00, with proceeds supporting the new Hancock Dog Park.

At 3:00, vendors will open along the Houghton waterfront. Tara Arens from the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce says they sold out vendor spaces this year. Food and beverages will be served beginning at 3:00 at Ray Kestner Waterfront Park, and Chad Borgen and the Collective will perform live tonight.

The Thatcher Markham Memorial 5k Run/Walk begins at 7:00 this evening at the west edge of downtown Hancock. The parade will follow, and will travel through Hancock, across the bridge, and into downtown Houghton. Parade entry has closed, and those who registered should have received line-up instructions.

Tomorrow’s schedule includes the Touch A Truck event at Keweenaw Chevrolet Buick GMC, an expanded classic car and motorcycle show at the Houghton County Fairgrounds, more activities and live entertainment at Kestner Park, and fireworks at dusk. Fireworks accompaniment music will be broadcast on 97.7 The Wolf.
