PHF Funds Eight Projects

The Portage Health Foundation has agreed to help fund eight projects through its small grant program. Officials said they received a record number of requests for the grants, which are designed to provide up to $3,000 for projects that will enhance wellness in Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon Counties.

Grant recipients include:
• The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community – $3,000 for an elder wellness program;
• The Adams Township School District – $3,000 to provide a support dog for students;
• The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City School District – $1,500 to help train their existing support dog;
 • The Calumet Art Center – $3,000 to create an outdoor learning space;
• The City of Hancock – $3,000 to help provide a drinking fountain and water bottle filling station at the Hancock Driving Park ball fields;
 • The Village of Laurium – $3,000 to upgrade the playground at the Gipp Recreation Center, and add equipment for use by those with special needs;
 • Superior Search and Rescue – $3,000 to help purchase new GPS units, with updates search maps, and the ability to track search and rescue teams; and
 • The Ontonagon Area Schools – $700 for maintenance of the school’s nature trail.
