High School
Wyatt Liston’s overtime goal gave Houghton a 2-1 victory over Calumet Saturday night, and earned the Gremlins a berth in the state high school hockey tournament quarterfinals. The Gremlins will face Sault Ste. Marie Wednesday night in Marquette at 7:00. Hear the broadcast on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.
In the girls’ high school basketball tournament Friday night…
– In Class B, Houghton won the District title with a 42-28 victory over Escanaba. The Gremlins will face Kalkaska in the Regional semifinal tomorrow night at Sault Ste. Marie. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
– In Class D, Lori Wardynski’s off-balance layup with one second remaining lifted Ontonagon to a 38-36 victory over Jeffers in the District title game. The Gladiators will face Forest Park in the Regional semifinal tomorrow night at Kingsford.
The boys’ tournament begins tonight.
– In Class B, Houghton plays at Kingsford. Hear the game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
– Class C at Ironwood, Calumet faces Hancock in the first game, and Ironwood takes on L’Anse in the second.
– Class D at Ontonagon, Jeffers meets Baraga at 6:00, and Ontonagon faces Chassell at 7:30. Our pregame coverage begins around 5:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear 102.com.
Conference champion Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated the Copper Country Conference Boys All-Star Team announced Friday. Brett Poissant of the Lakes was named Most Valuable Player. Lake Linden’s Jack Kumpula was selected as Coach of the Year. See the full roster here.
MTU Sweeps NMU
In college hockey, fourth-ranked Michigan Tech completed a weekend sweep of Northern Michigan University with a 3-1 victory Saturday night in Marquette, and a 5-1 win Friday in Houghton.
Tech will be seeded second in the WCHA tournament, and will host Alabama-Huntsville in a best-of-three series at MacInnes Arena beginning Friday night.
Northern Michigan is seeded sixth in the tournament, and will play at Bowling Green.
Huskies Claim GLIAC Hoops Title
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team won the GLIAC tournament with a 68-52 victory over Ashland on Sunday. The Huskies got off to a fast start, and led by 12 points at halftime. Kelli Guy led Tech with 18 points. Jillian Ritchie was named Tournament MVP, and Guy and Danielle Blake earned spots on the All-Tournament team. The Huskies reached the title game by beating Grand Valley State 77-66 on Saturday.
The Lady Huskies will host the NCAA Midwest Regional for the third time in the last six years. Tech is seeded first, and will open against Cedarville Friday at 5:00.
The Huskies men’s team earned an at-large bid to the playoffs. They are seeded sixth, and will face Indianapolis Friday at Bellarmine University in Louisville.
Finlandia
The Finlandia baseball team wrapped up its Florida trip Friday with a 25-3 loss to John Carroll University.
The Finlandia softball team lost 9-0 to the University of Rochester and 7-0 to Saint Mary’s College from Indiana Sunday. The Lions conclude their southern trip with games against Juniata College and Thiel College today.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the West Bend Bombers 13-5 Friday night. The Pioneers edged the Fond du Lac Bears 7-6 in a shootout Saturday. Connor Hannon and Ryan Sullivan each scored twice for the Pioneers. The Calumet Wolverines dropped a 7-4 decision at Fond du Lac Friday night, and fell at West Bend 12-2 Saturday night.
NHL – Red Wings Fall at Boston
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Bruins 5-3 yesterday afternoon. Goalie Jonas Gustavsson was replaced by Jimmy Howard after two periods after suffering an injury. The team hasn’t described the injury, but has called Petr Mrazek back from Grand Rapids. The Wings host Edmonton tonight. We’ll join the game after Houghton basketball on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Lost to Charlotte
The Detroit Pistons lost to the Hornets 108-101 last night. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 25 points, but was held to just four in the second half. The Pistons have dropped six in a row, and face the Lakers in Los Angeles tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 10:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers fell to the Astros 14-9 yesterday. Shane Greene gave up a run on five hits over two innings in his first spring start for Detroit. The Tigers play the Blue Jays this afternoon..
The Brewers lost to the Dodgers 4-3. Mike Fiers gave up one unearned run in 2-2/3rds innings. The Brewers face the Royals this afternoon.
NFL – Suh Signs with Dolphins
Former Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has agreed to join the Miami Dolphins. The deal is said to be worth 114-million dollars over six seasons, with 60-million guaranteed.

At the U.P. Health System Great Bear Chase Saturday…
– In the 50k Skiathlon, Chris Pappathopoulos from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, took the title.
– In the 50k Freestyle, Jan Myrda from Palos Heights, Illinois finished first.
– In the 50-k Classic, Ben Cogger from Duluth finished first.
– In the 25k Freestyle, Darrell Morse placed first.
– In the 25k Classic, Mike Wiitala took the title. Houghton’s Ruth Oppliger was the fastest woman.
– In the 10k Freestyle, Gavin Martell won a photo finish – a half-second better than Eli Hancock from Cable, Wisconsin.
– In the 10k Classic, Scott Hickman from AuTrain finished nearly eight minutes ahead of Ezequiel Medici from Hancock.
