The grave of a Civil War soldier will get a long-overdue tribute today.
According to Trout Creek American Legion Post 494, Hiram H. White was born in 1846 in Pennsylvania. He joined the 25th United States Colored Troop, which was formed in Pennsylvania in 1863, and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was honorably discharged at the end of the war in 1865.
White returned to Pennsylvania, then lived in Ohio and Minnesota, before making his way to Kenton. There, he worked as a barber until his death in 1917.
Kenton residents have honored his grave with a flag each summer for more than 100 years, but it took some recent genealogical research to confirm that the Hiram White buried in southern Houghton County is the same man who served in the Union Army. The recent discovery of some forgotten photos of members of the 25th United States Colored Troop provided the final link.
Sergeant Hiram H. White’s grave will be officially recognized in a ceremony this afternoon at 1:00 at the Kenton Cemetery. A lunch will follow at the Duncan Township Hall.
