Six local recreation projects will get boosts from Portage Health Foundation grants.
$105,714 will support two projects each in Keweenaw and Ontonagon Counties, and one project each in Houghton and Baraga Counties.
Grants were awarded to:
• Camp Josh, in Ontonagon County, which focuses on creating outdoor recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities and veterans. $20,000 will be used for parking lot and pathway improvements.
• The Copper Harbor Trails Club, which will receive $15,000 to help rebuild the Flying Squirrel trail, and create a new emergency access corridor at the bottom of the Flying Squirrel and Danimal trails.
• The Horizons Alternative School, which will use $19,969 to build and maintain an outdoor ice rink that will be open to the community.
• The Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club, which will receive $16,745 to repair damaged trails and install directional signs at trail intersections at Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids.
• Adventure Mountain in Ontonagon County’s Greenland Township, which will get $14,000 to purchase a groomer for its ski hill.
• L’Anse Township, which will use $20,000 to improve the access path at Second Sand Beach, providing better access for those with disabilities or limited mobility.
