Gremlins Baseball, Softball, Track Keep Rolling – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday
• Houghton defeated Iron Mountain 9-3.
 • Hancock swept Ironwood 16-1 and 14-9.
 • L’Anse split their doubleheader against Gogebic. The Purple Hornets won the opener 9-8, on Les Lafernier’s walk-off double. The Miners took the nightcap 22-13.
 • Jeffers blanked Ontonagon 10-0 and 15-0. Levi Frahm struck out all 12 batters he faced in the opener.

On the baseball schedule this afternoon…
• Calumet welcomes Negaunee.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Ironwood.

In softball yesterday…
• Houghton swept Calumet, 10-4 and 13-12. Grace Brunet tossed a one-hitter in the opener. The Copper Kings opened up an early 10-0 lead in the nightcap, but the Gremlins came back, and won it in the bottom of the seventh.
• L’Anse fell to Gogebic, 9-5 and 19-12.

On the softball schedule this afternoon…
• Houghton entertains Baraga.
• Calumet hosts Westwood.

At the Copper Country Invitational track and field meet yesterday, Houghton and Calumet placed first and second in both the boys and girls events.
• In the boys meet, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, L’Anse and West Iron County rounded out the top five. For the Gremlins, Cade Holombo took the 200 and 400-meter runs. Dryden Nelson of Calumet won the 100-meter dash and the long jump, and Richard Probst won both hurdles events. Dollar Bay’s Nik Thomas claimed the 800 and 1600-meter runs.
• In the girls meet, West Iron County, Ontonagon and Baraga filled out the top five. Abi Codere from Lake Linden-Hubbell took the 100-meter dash and the pole vault. Calumet’s Caitlyn Strom took the high jump and the long jump. Baraga’s Corina Jahfetson claimed the discus and the shot put.

In golf today, Houghton and Calumet will be among the teams competing at the Negaunee Range Bank Invitational.

College Hockey

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association is expected to add a ninth member school. Reports indicate it could be Augustana University in South Dakota, which plans to begin NCAA Division One hockey in the fall of 2023. The league has scheduled an introductory news conference this afternoon.

College Soccer

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has added a new recruit. Cheihk Cisse played for Bonanza High School in Las Vegas.

NHL

The second round of the NHL playoffs opens tonight…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Panthers welcome the Lightning.
• In the Western Conference, the Avalanche host the Blues.

NBA

The NBA conference finals begin this evening…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Celtics visit the Heat.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers won their fourth straight game last night, edging the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2. Alex Faedo pitched into the sixth inning, giving up a run on four hits. He left with a 2-1 lead, thanks to a homer by Jonathan Schoop. The Rays tied it with a run off Michael Fulmer in the eighth, but Harold Castro’s solo shot in the top of the ninth won it for Detroit.

The Tigers visit the Rays again tonight. Beau Brieske will pitch against Shane McClanahan. Coverage will begin at 6:20 on 99.3 The Lift. 

With Austin Meadows and Victor Reyes both on the Injured list, the Tigers have brought outfielder Daz Cameron back up from Toledo.

Three Milwaukee pitchers combined to toss a two-hitter, as the Brewers slipped past the Atlanta Braves 1-0 last evening. Freddy Peralta allowed both hits over seven strong innings, and struck out 10. Devin Williams and Josh Hader each struck out the side in the eighth and ninth innings. Hunter Renfroe scored the game’s only run on a wild pitch.

The Brewers host the Braves again tonight. Adrian Houser will start against Tucker Davidson.
