CCGOP Endorses Keranen for District Two Commission Seat

The Copper Country Republican Party Executive Committee has endorsed Schoolcraft Township Supervisor Joel Keranen to succeed the late Albert Koskela as District Two Houghton County Commissioner.

The resolution passed on a 12-0 vote.

It describes Keranen as a “strong constitutional conservative,” a member of the National Rifle Association, and “an ardent supporter of the Second Amendment.” It says nothing about Keranen’s positions on specific issues facing the county.

The executive committee’s early endorsement snubs three other Republicans hoping to get the party’s nomination in the August primary. Along with Keranen, Lake Linden Village Council President Glenn Schuldt, Torch Lake Township Trustee Lou Ambuehl, and Richard Nye of Dollar Bay are on the ballot.

No Democrat has filed for the position. Independents have until July 21st to file to appear on the November ballot.

The Houghton County Board will appoint a successor to fill out Koskela’s unexpired term at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday. Applications from those who wish to be considered are due by Monday, and can be filed through the Houghton County website, or at the clerk’s office.
