Congressman Dan Benishek is one of several lawmakers calling for a halt to the prohibition of a particular assault rifle bullet.
At issue is the possible ban on the 5.56mm/.223 caliber M855 “green tip” ammo, a common round used in AR15 rifles.
In a letter to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Bensihek and 238 other legislators urged that bullet not be relabeled as “armor piercing”.
Benishek has also co-sponsored a bill to prevent the ATF from implementing a regulatory program to ban the use of the ammo.
The Northern Michigan Congressman says hunting, target shooting and gun ownership is a way of life for many area residents and called the move by the ATF a direct threat to the people’s 2nd Amendment rights.
