Tourists Flock To Frozen Tahquamenon Falls

It’s quite a scene right now at the Tahquamenon Falls in the eastern Upper Peninsula.

Kevin Dennis, Unit Supervisor at the Tahquamenon Falls State Park, says that the falls are almost completely frozen over, with only one small channel of water remaining open. He says the rest of the “upper falls” are basically a giant ice formation.

Dennis adds that the ice formations on the cliffs near the falls are a spectacular combination of green and blue ice, which is bringing crowds of tourists to the area.

According to Dennis, the falls being frozen over like this is unusual, but it is not unprecedented. He says that when weather is as cold as it has been recently, the huge waterfalls can freeze up, despite the moving water below.

Dennis says that at this point, he and his staff are not worried about massive flooding in the state park this spring. They do expect higher-than-usual water levels, but don’t expect any major problems.
