COVID-19 Numbers Shrink

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to ebb in our region.

The Western U.P. Health Department recorded just 10 new diagnoses in the past week in Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga, Ontonagon and Gogebic Counties.

One death was recorded, in Houghton County, bringing the pandemic total to 264 in the five-county region.

Numbers generally do not include the results from home tests, so actual totals may be a bit higher.

Those over age 50 and others who are immunocompromised are now eligible to receive an additional vaccine booster. The Health Department reports that many providers have same-day availability.

Statewide, the COVID-19 numbers have ticked up just a bit. Over the past week, an average of 697 new cases per day were confirmed. Officials say the biggest increase was in Washtenaw County, where students from the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University recently returned from spring break.
