Angel Mission Finds Permanent Home

The Copper Country Angel Mission will soon be moving to a new location.

The Angel Mission’s new home in Calumet

The Angel Mission was founded in the late 1990s. It offers a variety of programs, including a free store that provides clothing and other household essentials, a food pantry, assistance with home heating and medical costs, a winter clothing giveaway, and the Angel Tree Christmas program. The charity was originally supported by the Calumet Presbtyrian Church. When that church folded, the Portage Lake United Church in Houghton stepped in.

Over more than 20 years, the Angel Mission has moved several times, always renting space in downtown Calumet. Now, there is a permanent home in its future. The Angel Mission has signed an agreement to purchase the old North End Bar building at the end of Fifth Street.

Board member Sherry Middlemis-Brown tells us the down payment has come from the Portage Health Foundation Giving Tuesday campaign and some other donors. The monthly mortgage payment will be less than the rent they’re paying for their current location. Some rehab work has been done inside the building, but board member Jim Northey says additional interior finishing work must be completed before the move can be made.

A GoFundMe page has been established to collect contributions to help prepare the Angel Mission’s new home. If you’d like to help, click here. You can also donate through their website, or by mail or personal delivery to their current location: Angel Mission, 119 Fifth Street, Calumet, MI 49913.
