Hancock Resident Returns Home to Bring First Rose Society Chapter to the Upper Peninsula

In many home gardens one may find a few roses popping out of the soil. The genus rosa has a long and storied history. Showing up throughout as a symbol of love, beauty, war and peace. There are nearly 150 different species of roses. Today, rose gardens are celebrated and many competitions are held in various communities. Mellissa Boerman, is a Consulting Rosarian and has been growing flower buds for over 25 years. She recently moved back to the area, bringing with her, her roses from Tennessee. She says that the Upper Peninsula is actually a great place to grow roses.

And I also want to help people plant varieties or pick varieties that will grow well in this climate. The Great Lakes, being on Lake Superior here, affords us a lot of advantages. Zone 5b is the same that you would find down state, near like the Gaylord area. – Melissa Boerman, Consulting Rosarian

The goal for any Consulting Rosarian is to spread information to other gardeners, either experienced or for those just starting. If you are interested in growing your own roses, check out Boerman’s facebook page for the Keweenaw Rose Growers. She has a wealth of knowledge she would love to share with the community and other gardeners.
