This Saturday at John MacInnis Student Ice Arena, a local high school athlete is bringing the community an adaptive hockey clinic. While in Idaho for a ski camp Houghton High School senior Maria Velat was introduced to the sport by para-Olympians she met while there. Adaptive hockey sits players in a sort of bucket that has a pair of skate underneath it. Velat said that the experience reminded her of the process she goes through as a track and field athlete.
Velat hopes people will come out this weekend to check out a new perspective on a sport enjoyed by many. The clinic is part put on by the Marquette sled cats, an adaptive hockey team who will play in an exhibition game, and Michigan tech. The clinic starts at 1 pm this Saturday, and is free to all.
