After a three-week delay caused by the contract dispute between Major League Baseball team owners and players, spring training games finally got underway yesterday.

The Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies played to a 6-6 tie. Eduardo Rodriguez gave up a run on three hits over three innings. Before the game, manager A.J. Hinch announced that Rodriguez will be the regular season Opening Day starter. Akil Baddoo, Riley Greene and Kody Clemens homered.

The Tigers will face the Pittsburgh Pirates this afternoon.

After yesterday’s game, it was reported that the Phillies and former Tiger Nick Castellanos had agreed to a five-year, $100 million contract.

The Tigers have signed veteran starting pitcher Michael Pineda to a one-year deal. Pineda spent the past three seasons with the Minnesota Twins. Last year, he was 9-8 with a 3.62 earned run average. Before joining the Twins, he pitched for the New York Yankees for four seasons, after spending his first year with the Seattle Mariners.

After missing all of last season because of Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, former Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander tossed two hitless innings for the Houston Astros yesterday, and hit 95 miles per hour with his fastball.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers tied 3-3. Ethan Small started for Milwaukee, and turned in two hitless innings.

The Brewers will play the Texas Rangers this afternoon.
