UPDATE; Adams Township water system springs leak

UPDATE TUESDAY, MARCH 8TH;

The boil advisory has been lifted. Upper Peninsula Health officials say water customers should flush pipes, faucets, and drinking foundations for at least five minutes unless otherwise directed by your local utility. If you experience any discolored water, continue flushing until clear. Before serving or using water, Food Service Establishment and Retail Food Establishment operators must follow the instructions in the recovery section of their “Emergency Action Plans for Retail Food Establishments” guide. If you have questions, contact the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department, at (906) 482-7382

Updated as of 5:34 AM Monday. Hancock will be under an advisory starting at 7 AM.

Officials discovered a broken water main in Adams Township’s system around 7 PM Friday, leading to a loss of pressure . The utility has declared a boil water advisory until the problem is corrected and testing can be done to ensure bacteriological levels are in the normal range.

Potentially harmful contaminants pool in lines when the water becomes stagnant after a loss of pressure. Hubbell saw a similar issue occur last week. The main broke late Thursday and was fixed on Friday. Testing was conducted on Saturday and Sunday, with an all-clear given on Monday morning. Adams Township residents should expect the advisory to last until the beginning of the work week.

Water used in cooking, making ice, brushing your teeth or that meant for consumption should be brought to the appropriate temperature for one minute and then allowed to cool. Bottled water is an alternative.

Portage Township was included in the advisory early Sunday and the City of Hancock will exhaust its reserves by 7 AM Monday, joining the advisory until test results come back indicating safe bacteriological levels.
