Calumet Township home burns Saturday evening

A residence in the 25000 block of Maple Street in Calumet Township went up in flames Saturday evening. Responding to the blaze was Calumet Township Fire and Rescue, along with Michigan State Police, Houghton County Sheriff and Laurium Police Department personnel.

No cause is known at this time, but neighbors say the home has a reputation for being cluttered, which could have potentially helped contribute to the fire’s spread throughout the structure. The owner was able to get out before crews arrived at the scene.

Several hours after it started, flames were still visible from inside the walls, along with the attic and roof. Firefighters used chain saws to cut into the shingles and expose the fire for hoses on the ground. Strong winds were prevalent but it was contained to the one home, even though other residences are built close by. More information will be posted when it becomes available.
