Calumet’s Aksel Loukus Named GLHC Player of the Year – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

All of last night’s high school basketball games were snowed out. Some have been rescheduled…
• The Ewen-Trout Creek at Bessemer doubleheader will be played tomorrow.
• The Ontonagon at Ironwood boys game will be played tomorrow.
• The Baraga at Chassell girls game will be made up tonight.

In other girls games this evening…
• Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Ontonagon in a make-up contest from last Thursday.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Calumet hosts West Iron County in a make-up game from February 11th.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City welcomes Ironwood for a 6:00 game.

The UP Alpine Ski Championships at Mont Ripley were postponed from yesterday to today.

The high school hockey tournament opens tonight at the SDC. Houghton takes on Hancock at 5:30, and Calumet faces Jeffers at 7:30. Coverage of both games will begin at 5:10 on KBear 102.3.

Local teams are well-represented on this year’s Great Lakes Hockey Conference All-Conference teams. Calumet goaltender Aksel Loukus earned the Jim Crawford Player of the Year award. The Don Miller Coach of the Year award went to Marquette’s Doug Garrow, and Kody Moyer of the Redmen claimed the Rick Miller Rookie of the Year award.

• Chad Nordstrom from Hancock

Local members of the second team include:

• Todd Anderson from Hancock

Local players who received Honorable Mention votes include:

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team fell 79-70 at Saginaw Valley State last night. Sara Dax and Alex Rondorf each scored 18 in a game in a make-up game from January 15th.

Three Finlandia University women’s basketball players have been honored by the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference. Bailey Froberg and Katie Lundeen earned second team honors. Froberg was also named Scholar-Athlete of the Year and freshman Maija Rice was selected as Rookie of the Year. The Finlandia women open the C2C conference tournament tomorrow against Mary Washington in Santa Cruz, California.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings return to the ice tonight , when they host the Colorado Avalanche. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

After the All-Star break, the Detroit Pistons host the Cleveland Cavaliers tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Fishing

The annual Chassell VFW Ice Fishing Tournaments will be held Saturday on Portage Lake and Chassell Bay. Fishing will open at 7:00. In the adult tournament, all fish must be weighed in and registered by 7:00 pm. The entry fee is $20. Prizes will be awarded for the top five pike and walleye catches, the top three crappie and perch catches, and the biggest rock bass. Food will be served and prizes will be awarded beginning at 7:00. 

For the kids tournament, all fish must be weighed in and registered by 1:00. The tourney is free for kids ages 15 and younger. Food will be served and prizes will be awarded beginning at 1:00. Kids who fish will be eligible to win door prizes. 

Register at the Chassell VFW evenings between 6:00 and closing, or Saturday morning between 7:00 and 10:00.
