Tech Hockey Salvages Shootout Win at Ferris – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

At the U.P. high school swimming championships Saturday…
• The Houghton boys finished second to Marquette. The Redmen dominated the meet, winning all 11 swimming events. The Gremlins turned in seven second-pace finishes. Houghton’s Quinn Aho won the diving title on Friday, and set a new U.P. finals record.
• The Houghton girls placed fourth, behind Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie and Kingsford. Leah Komarzee of the Gremlins won the 100 breaststroke.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team overcame an early deficit to salvage a 5-5 tie with Ferris State University Saturday night. The Huskies claimed the extra Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings point in a shootout. Tech trailed 4-2 entering the third period, but Trenton Bliss’ second goal of the evening kicked off the comeback. Brian Halonen’s power play tally tied the game. After the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead, Alec Broetzman found the net late in the period to force overtime. Goalie Mark Sinclair got credit for the tie, after replacing Blake Pietila late in the first period.

The Northern Michigan hockey team completed a weekend sweep at Bowling Green with a 4-2 victory Saturday.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team ended its regular season with a hard-fought 2-1 overtime loss to Concordia-Wisconsin Saturday. Aleah Giddings gave the Lions the lead early in the second period. The Falcons tied the game late in the second frame. Emily Reimche scored the game-winner for CUW 1:44 into the three-on-three extra frame. Kayla Savoie-Penton made 26 saves. The Lions prepare to face top-seed Adrian College in the opening round of the NCHA tournament next weekend.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech basketball teams swept Wayne State Saturday…
• The women won a 72-69 overtime thriller. Ellie Mackay led the Huskies with 20 points. Alex Rondorf made two late free throws to seal the win.
• The men raced out to a big early lead, and cruised past the Warriors 82-57. Tech led 48-16 at halftime. Owen White had 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Northern Michigan split its games against Saginaw Valley State Saturday, the women falling 56-49, and the men taking an 88-62 victory.

College Skiing

At the NCAA Central Region Championships in Duluth Saturday…
• Northern Michigan dominated the men’s classic 10k. The Wildcats took three of the top four positions, led by Kjetil Banerud. Michigan Tech’s Skylar Patten placed third.
• Michigan Tech claimed three of the top five spots in the women’s 5k classic, with Nea Katajala taking top honors.

The regional wraps up today with the skate 15/20K events.

GLHL

Nick Harris’ overtime goal gave the Portage Lake Pioneers a 7-6 victory over the West Bend Bombers Saturday night.

The Calumet Wolverines upended the Eagle River Falcons 10-7 Saturday.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings are off until Wednesday, when they host the Colorado Avalanche. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

After the All-Star break, the Detroit Pistons host the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday night. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
