Houghton Girls Stop Calumet – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In boys high school basketball last night…
• Calumet edged Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 60-59 in overtime.
• Hancock lost to Ishpeming 59-43.
• Jeffers buried Baraga 92-26. Johnny Schutz led the Jets with 21 points, and Levi Frahm added 17. Daniel Nieskes and Joel Mayo each scored seven for the Vikings.

In girls action…
• Houghton avenged an earlier loss, and pulled away from Calumet 58-49. Meghan Trewhella and Annika Peterson each scored 19 for the Gremlins, with Peterson sinking 13 of 14 free throw attempts. Marybeth Halonen and Jana Loukus each scored 10 for the Copper Kings, who suffered their second loss of the season.
• Ontonagon smothered Watersmeet 66-17.
• Baraga outscored Jeffers 58-39. Reide Osterman had 23 points for the Vikings, and Savannah Asiala scored 11 for the Jets.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Houghton travels to Marquette.
• Ontonagon hosts Watersmeet at 7:15.

On the girls schedule this evening…
• Hancock entertains Westwood.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Watersmeet.
• Chassell visits Ontonagon at 6:00.

In girls-boys doubleheaders…
• L’Anse welcomes Lake Linden-Hubbell.
• Ewen-Trout Creek hosts Wakefield-Marenisco.

In high school hockey tonight…
• Calumet faces off at Houghton. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Jeffers entertains Negaunee.
• Hancock hosts Marquette.

In Alpine skiing, at the Division Two, Region Four tournament at Nub’s Nob yesterday…
• The Houghton girls team finished third behind Petoskey and Harbor Springs. That was good enough to qualify them for the state finals. Ashley Lehmann took second in the slalom and third in the giant slalom.
• The Houghton boys team finished fifth, and did not qualify for the state finals. However, Reed and Eli Heathman qualified individually. Reed won the giant slalom and took second in the slalom. Eli finished sixth in the giant slalom and ninth in the slalom.

College Hockey

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 7-2 at Trine University last night. Aleah Giddings and Olivia Hodges scored for the Lions, who were outshot 43-8. Those teams skate in Indiana again tonight.

Michigan Tech’s Blake Pietila has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Goaltender of the Week. On Friday against Bowling Green, Pietila set a new Tech record with seven shutouts in a season, and tied the career shutout mark with 10.

College Basketball

The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team outscored Saginaw Valley State 59-39 yesterday.

Michigan Tech’s Trent Bell has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. The Negaunee native scored 36 points and grabbed 24 rebounds in the Huskies’ wins at Davenport and Grand Valley State.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team will host Wisconsin-Superior in a make-up game tonight. Tip-off is at 5:30 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

Finlandia’s Carsyn Osterman has been named the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. The Baraga High School grad recorded 28 assists, 17 rebounds and nine steals as Finlandia defeated Grace Christian and Great Lakes Christian.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Minnesota Wild 7-4 last night. Alec Nedelkjovic gave up six goals on 24 shots.

The Wings visit the New York Rangers Thursday. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons dropped their eighth straight game last night, 103-94 to the Washington Wizards. Saddiq Bey led Detroit with 24 points.

The Pistons take on the Celtics in Boston tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Minor league pitchers and catchers are reporting to Detroit Tigers training camp in Lakeland, Florida, today. Their first workouts are scheduled for tomorrow. Major league spring training will be delayed, as the owners’ lockout continues. Little progress is reported in negotiations for a new labor deal, and no talks are scheduled at this time.

Olympics

The U.S. women’s hockey team defeated Finland 4-1 yesterday, and will face Canada in the gold medal game. Sault Ste. Marie’s Abby Rocque scored for the U.S. team – an empty-netter with five seconds remaining.
