Village of Calumet council president resigns

Today marks the final day in Calumet politics for Council President Brian Abramson. He has recently moved from the village, settling in Ontonagon County’s Rockland Township. Abramson has been president since the 2020 election, but served on the council prior to that. He says that eliminating outdated resolutions from the municipal code was a huge achievement during his tenure. Abramson shepherded the council through the aftermath of the Fifth Street Fire, which destroyed three buildings in the historic downtown area last May.

The resignation is expected to be accepted by Village Clerk Dave Geisler this afternoon. The move will leave five members on Calumet’s council. The body is currently drafting a new budget.

A public hearing has been scheduled for Monday, February 28th. Immediately after, the council will go into session to pass the document in time for the fiscal year beginning the following day. Manager Amber Goodman presented to the council on the progress in the matter. Given the population decline noted in the 2020 Census, revenue sharing from the State of Michigan will fall, which needs to be properly accounted for to avoid a shortfall.
