Missing Ballot Petition Issue May be Resolved Soon

Last night Calumet’s village council heard a status update to the situation with the missing ballot petition’s submitted back in August 2021. At a special meeting last week the council took the advice of their legal council to repeal ordinances 157 and 158 that would have the village positions of treasurer and clerk appointed by the village council.

The update to the situation now after the Village’s Lawyer, James Tercha met with County Clerk Jen Kelly, will be to have the petition for treasurer placed on the may election ballot, as it had already been verified by the township of calumet. The second petition, submitted by Peggy Germain, regarding the position of clerk to become an elected position now falls on her to produce a copy of the referendum.

Germain noted during the special meeting last that she is in possession of a copy. Germain has been contacted by the village, and has been asked to submit her copy for the village to make a second copy of, by January 25th. The idea is to have a copy made and signed by the village and in the presence of the county clerk, it be submitted to the township for verification. Both ballot referendums will then appear at the May 3rd election.

And with the CopperDog 150 coming up soon, the council also approved for road closures so that sled teams can start the grueling race in Calumet on Friday March 4th. 5th Street from Scott St. to Pine St. will be closed to traffic starting 5pm, March 4th for the race.
