November’s record-breaking Giving Tuesday drive held by the Portage Health Foundation helped some of the 22 participating nonprofits more than others. Omega House is the runaway winner. Between donations and a $200,000 match by PHF, over $643,000 was raised for nearly two dozen groups. Roughly one-fifth, or $128,971, went to the end-of-life care facility. Coming in second was 31 Backpacks ($58,145) and the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home ($56,853).
Givers could have their offerings split evenly between all participating organizations or directed to one effort in particular. The winners this year have consistently been rewarded in past Giving Tuesday efforts. The average received by a non-profit was over $25,000.
Recreation efforts such as the Swedetown and Copper Harbor Trails Clubs, or the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club were well represented. Several emergency response and volunteer fire departments took part as well. Giving Tuesday occurs in the week following Thanksgiving.
