Robert Kyllonen is stepping down after over 30 years on the Laurium Police force. His official end date is January 29th, but unused vacation time effectively pushes that to now.
Replacing Kyllonen is Sergeant Kurt Erkkila. He says that the promotion doesn’t change his job responsibilities greatly.
Erkkila expects to have more interactions with Village Council as top cop.
The force is fully staffed at four. With Kyllonen’s departure, efforts are already underway to find a new hire. Erkkila says Laurium Police prides itself in providing continuous patrols of the entire village, something not seen in some nearby communities. He thinks the open spot is a great opportunity as a first job in law enforcement or as a change of pace compared to demands of larger cities.
In a statement, Kyllonen says, “While I look forward to the future, I will miss my colleagues and serving this community in this capacity,” said Kyllonen. There is still work to be done, but I am confident in the new leadership of the department to continue the charge.”
