Redistricting Commission approves state and federal maps

Michigan’s elected officials finally know what their next race will look like, for now at least. Yesterday the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission formally announced maps for federal and state elections for the 2022 cycle. The boundaries brush off concerns of potential civil rights violations. Several majority minority districts are gone, which would seem to directly contradict the charge of taking into account communities of interest. The maps will almost certainly face legal challenges.

For the Western UP, nothing changes at the congressional or state Senate level. The seat currently held by Republican Jack Bergman will continue to consist of all the Upper Peninsula, plus a large swath of Northern Lower Michigan. Ed McBroom’s district will stretch east all the way to the mouth of the St. Mary’s River.

Representative Greg Markkanen will no longer have to compete in Baraga County. It slides into the 109th District, which includes Marquette. Iron Mountain, Kingsford, and the western portion of Dickinson County join Iron, Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton, and Keweenaw Counties in the reconstituted 110th.
