Hampton Inn and Suites hosts grand opening

City officials and dignitaries from various economic development organizations were on hand Thursday morning for the grand opening of the Hampton Inn and Suites near Franklin Square in Houghton. The longtime hotel site is hardly recognizable, but owners Jon and Jen Julien say the changes are worthy it. Still, they are happy to have guests again after closing the building for renovations.

The Juliens and their children addressed those gathered after a traditional ribbon cutting. They thanked a representative from Hilton, who was on hand, and individually recognized contractors who contributed to the project. Julien says those who came from out of the area faced unique challenges due to the tourism boom the Keweenaw has experienced recently.

It’s also been very challenging to get hotel rooms for a lot of these sub(contractor)s that came from out of town all summer long, so we came up with a lot of creative solutions and made sure everyone had somewhere to go home at night, while they helped work on this.

The lobby boasts elevated ceilings with a continental breakfast and fireside gathering area. The upper level will no longer host a restaurant, but a bar is still available. The pool has been moved from the interior of the lower level to a space providing a better view of the canal. Guests are already staying at the hotel.
