Governor Whitmer sets deadline for car insurance refund

If you are a policyholder of a car insurance plan in the State of Michigan, you will have a refund by May 9th at the latest. Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s office provided additional details this morning about the one-time disbursement from the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association fund Monday morning.

Every Michigan driver with an open policy will be receiving $400 by check or ACH from their insurance company. The MCCA will be transferring the money to private insurers by March 9th. The Department of Financial and Insurance Services has set up a Frequently Asked Questions page on their website. The agency says consumers are not required to do anything to ensure they receive the money.

Whitmer touted the refund as a result of insurance reform, which she signed in 2019. “Michigan used to have the highest auto insurance rates in the nation, but we worked together to put Michiganders first, significantly lowering the cost of insurance and putting $400 per vehicle back in driver’s pockets while continuing to provide access to the most generous benefits in the nation,” said Governor Whitmer. “I am pleased with how quickly the plan was developed and appreciate the clear guidance provided both to insurers and consumers. The bulletin and website lay out the timeline and requirements so that insurers understand that they must process the refunds as quickly as possible, and Michiganders know when and how they will get the surplus money they are owed.”
