Christmas toy drives need donations by this weekend

Both the Toys for Tots drive run by the Marine Corps League Keweenaw Detachment, and the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s No Kid Without a Christmas initiative need monetary and physical donations to be in by this weekend.

There are several businesses that have drop-offs set up for each. Toys for Tots serves Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga, and Ontonagon Counties, whereas the other is for Keweenaw only. Both organizations need time to sort and arrange gifts, even do some shopping for kids enrolled in the programs. Sheriff Curt Pennala lays out the timeline.

Our shopping day is next Monday, the 13th. From there, we’re gonna be putting everything together and hopefully deliver on the 16th.

Toys for Tots is expecting to dole out presents on the 18th.

Pennala says the effort is going swimmingly. He stresses that even if you cannot get a donation in by Monday, don’t hesitate to drop off a check by year’s end.

Keep in mind that we do always take donations anytime between now and the end of the year. Whatever’s left over we’ll use towards the program next year.

Toys given to either program should be unwrapped and brand new.
