MTU Hoops Split at Northwood
The eighth-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team suffered its second loss of the season last night… falling at Northwood 96-90 in overtime. The Timberwolves overcame an eight-point deficit in the final minute of regulation to force the extra period. Jillian Ritchie scored a career-high 35 points, and Danielle Blake added 28, With two games remaining in the regular season, the Huskies maintain a one-game lead over Wayne State in the battle for home court advantage for the full GLIAC tournament.

The Tech men’s team claimed home court advantage for the first round of the playoffs by beating Northwood 83-81 in overtime. Luke Heller’s free throw tied the game with 16 seconds to go in regulation, and Dillon Gordon’s 3-pointer with 15-seconds remaining in the extra period was the game-winner. Ben Stelzer led the Huskies with 24 points. Both Tech teams visit Lake Superior State tomorrow.

The Michigan Tech hockey team has the weekend off. Huskies’ co-captain Tanner Kero has been named Michigan’s College MVP by College Hockey, Inc. The Hancock native leads the WCHA in scoring.

NMU Hoops Splits with LSU
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team easily defeated Lake Superior State 69-49 last night. The men’s team fell to the 19th-ranked Lakers 71-55. Both Wildcats’ teams play at Northwood tomorrow.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team skates at Bowling Green tonight and tomorrow.

Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s hockey team wraps up its season at home against St. Norbert tonight. Face-off is at 7:15 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Lions’ women’s basketball team closes its regular season tomorrow afternoon at Mount Mary University.

Finlandia continues to fill out its football coaching staff. Ishpeming native Dylan Jurasin was introduced yesterday as an assistant coach. Jurasin played college ball at Saginaw Valley State and Northern Michigan, and served on the high school coaching staffs at Ishpeming, Bessemer and Gwinn. He’ll focus on linebackers. Finlandia’s new football team will debut against Alma College on Saturday, September 5th at McAfee Field.

GLHL
In Great Lakes Hockey League play, the Portage Lake Pioneers host the West Bend Bombers tonight, and the Mosinee Papermakers tomorrow night. Both games begin at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. The Calumet Wolverines entertain Mosinee tonight, and West Bend tomorrow. Face-offs are at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Stars
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Dallas tomorrow night. Face-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Trade for Prince, Jackson

Tayshaun Prince has returned to the Detroit Pistons. Detroit sent Jonas Jerebko and Gigi Datome to the Celtics to get Prince, who was a member of the 2004 championship team. The Pistons also traded D-J Augustin and Kyle Singler to the Thunder for point guard Reggie Jackson. Jackson is considered a very promising player, but has been stuck behind Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma’s lineup.

The Pistons return from the all-star break tonight, when they host the Bulls. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Detroit Tigers’ pitchers and catchers will hold their first workouts today, as training camp opens in Lakeland, Florida. The Tigers announced one-year contracts for 11 pre-arbitration players on their 40-man roster, including shortstop Jose Iglesias, reliever Blaine Hardy, outfield prospect Steven Moya and catching prospect James McCann.
