35 Angel Tree families still looking for donors

Each Christmas season, the Copper Country Angel Mission sets up a tree filled with the wants and needs of children across the area. Sherry Middlemis-Brown, who sits on the Board of Directors, says that about two-thirds of the requests have been answered, but that still leaves 35 kids hoping for their holiday wishes to be fulfilled.

Middlemas-Brown says that COVID still has people altering their visitation patterns to the store the organization runs on Fifth Street in Calumet, but the Angel Tree program is going more smoothly this year than last.

We ended up having a lot more cash donations because patrons weren’t going out and shopping. We ended up having to a little bit more scrambling on our own to get those things purchased, or ordered, or whatever, but we did have the cash to help support that.

The Copper Country Angel Mission is also running a winter coat drive, with drop off points at several area businesses. Snow pants, water-resistant gloves and other items are also on the list of apparel being accepted.

The mission helps with temporary shelter needs, and rent and utility assistance, but its other tentpole program is back-to-school help. Around 300 backpacks are filled with colored pencils, notebooks, trappers, and other supplies for students across several districts.
