Lawmakers Move To Cut Spending

The Michigan House Wednesday continued efforts to cut spending in the General Fund this year, by approving a $420 million reduction. It’s part of a larger effort underway to bring the state budget into balance.

The measure transfers money from the School Aid Fund for community colleges. Minority Democrats opposed the effort, saying the money should stay in the school aid fund.

House Republican Al Pscholka argued that schools are not getting any less in the budget than they were earlier promised. Democrats counter however that school funding is still down compared to four years ago.

Much of the deficit was caused by big tax credits now being claimed by business.
