College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team swept Northwood 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-21) in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals last night. Anna Jonynas led the Huskies with 14 kills. Laura De Marchi contributed 37 assists, and Megan Utlak had 14 digs.
As the top seed, Tech will host the championship tournament this weekend. Ferris State and Wayne State will meet in the first semifinal Saturday at noon. The Huskies will play Davenport at 2:30.
Honors continue to come in for some local high school football players. The Michigan High School Football Coaches Association has released its all-region teams. The Division Six team for 11-player football includes Dryden Nelson, Lenny Bjorn, Alan Bjorn and Tom Erkkila from Calumet. The eight-player Division Two team includes Kirby Koskela, Troy Corrigan, Marcus Sutherland, Ben Tampas, James Milkey and Sam Roberts from Lake Linden-Hubbell. See the full rosters here.
College Basketball
The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team hosts Minnesota-Crookston tonight.
The Northern men’s team plays at Minnesota-Crookston.
Michigan Tech’s Owen White is the preseason pick for Men’s Basketball Player of the Year in the GLIAC North Division. White was last season’s Player of the Year. He’s joined on the preseason all-conference team by fellow Husky Trent Bell, and Northern Michigan’s Max Bjorklund.
Tech’s Jordan Ludescher and Ellie Mackay were named to the preseason GLIAC North Division women’s all-conference team, along with Northern’s Makaylee Kuhn.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Vegas tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will start at 9:35 on KBear 102.3.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons finished strong, and downed the Indiana Pacers 97-89 last night. The game was tied with six minutes remaining when Cory Joseph hit a three-pointer that put Detroit up for good. Joseph finished with 16 points. Jerami Grant led the team with 17.
The Pistons host the Golden State Warriors tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
MLB
A couple of former Detroit Tigers pitchers made news yesterday. Justin Verlander will stay with the Houston Astros. He’s recovering from Tommy John surgery, and, at age 39, will make $25 million next season. Robbie Ray of the Toronto Blue Jays was named the American League Cy Young Award winner.
Milwaukee starter Corbin Burnes won the National League Cy Young Award, after leading the majors with a 2.43 earned run average.
NFL
In tonight’s NFL game, the New England Patriots visit the Atlanta Falcons. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff sat out yesterday’s practice, as he continues to recover from an oblique injury suffered last Sunday. Tim Boyle took first team reps yesterday. He’s still on the injured reserve list because he broke his thumb in the preseason, but could be activated before Sunday’s this Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield also missed practice yesterday because of a couple of injuries, but says he hopes to play on Sunday.
