Calumet Football Falls in Regional Final – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The Calumet High School football team’s season ended with a 34-7 loss at Standish-Sterling in the Division Six state tournament regional finals Saturday afternoon. The Copper Kings scored first, completing their opening possession with a two-yard Dryden Nelson touchdown run. The Panthers answered with a 70-yard scoring drive. Calumet threatened late in the second half, but fumbled near the Standish goal line, leaving the halftime score tied 7-7. The Panthers dominated the second half, with their aggressive defense forcing two more fumbles and a late interception. Lane Tybalt ran for three scores for Standish. The Panthers will face Lansing Catholic in the semifinals next week.

In 11 player Division Seven, Westwood lost at Traverse City Saint Francis 48-20 in the regional final Saturday.

The eight-player football finals are set.
• In Division One semifinals, Rudyard fell 42-36 in overtime at Suttons Bay on Saturday. Lenawee Christian advanced by defeating Martin 34-16 Friday night. The Norsemen and Cougars will meet for the state title Saturday at 11:00 at the Superior Dome.
• In Division Two, North Central crushed Marion 73-8 yesterday. Colon eliminated Au Gres-Sims 42-6. The Jets and the Magi will play for the state crown Saturday at 2:00 at the Superior Dome.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team salvaged a weekend split with Northern Michigan University with a 5-2 victory Saturday night. Logan Pietila scored twice for the Huskies. Trenton Bliss and Arvid Caderoth each had a goal, and Brian Halonen added a late empty-netter. Blake Pietila made 27 saves.

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to Aurora University Saturday. The Lions got goals from Milos Todorovic, Brady Clayton and Sheldon Brett. Marcus Gloss gave up three goals over the first 10 minutes, and was replaced by Connor Duffy.

The Finlandia women’s team fell 3-2 at Aurora Saturday. Cassidy Becia and Breanna Bisek found the net for the Lions. Kayla Savoie-Penton made 54 saves to keep Finlandia in the game. Those team skate at Aurora again this afternoon.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team held off Saginaw Valley State 21-20 Saturday afternoon. Will Ark threw two touchdown passes. The Huskies finish their campaign with a 6-4 overall record, and a third-place finish in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 5-2 mark.

The Northern football team closed its season with a 34-26 victory over Northwood University Saturday. The Wildcats finish with a record of 4-7 overall, and 2-6 in the GLIAC, where they tied for fifth place. It was the final conference game for Northwood, which will leave the GLIAC to join the Great Midwest Athletic Conference next fall.

The Finlandia football squad concluded its season with a 79-6 loss downstate at Olivet College Saturday. The Lions’ only score came when Kejuan Sanders recovered a fumble and ran 97 yards for a touchdown. It was the first fumble return for a score in school history. The Lions finish their campaign with a record of 0-9, and have now lost 30 straight games, dating back to 2017.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan women’s basketball teams began their seasons at the NMU Invitational Saturday…
• The Huskies edged Lewis University 75-71. Ellie Mackay led Tech with 18 points and nine rebounds. MTU will face William Jewell University today.
• The Wildcats sank William Jewell 61-41 Saturday, and face Lewis today.

On the final day of the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge at Lewis University Saturday…
• The Huskies men’s team downed the host Flyers 64-56. Eric Carl and Owen White each scored 22 for Tech.
• The Wildcats lost 76-62 to McKendree.

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team visits Carthage College today.

The Finlandia women’s team has the weekend off.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team ended its regular season with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) sweep at Wayne State Saturday afternoon. Olivia Ghormley paced MTU with 15 kills. Carissa Beyer had 21 digs, and Laura De Marchi had 35 assists. The Huskies finish with a 22-5 overall record. They went 14-1 in the GLIAC, and won their final 14 conference matches, and the conference title. They will open the GLIAC tournament Wednesday at home against eighth-seeded Northwood.

NHL

Dylan Larkin’s overtime goal lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens Saturday night. Larkin’s second goal of the evening came 1:41 into the extra stanza. Pius Suter also scored for Detroit. Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 35 shots.

The Wings visit the Columbus Blue Jackets tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Toronto Raptors tonight.

MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers picked up infielder Mike Brosseau from the Tampa Bay Rays in a trade Saturday. Brosseau is 27 years old. He has made starts at second, third and first base. He struggled at the plate this past season, and split time between the Rays and their Durham Triple-A affiliate. In exchange, Tampa Bay gets reliever prospect Evan Reifert, who pitched at Low-A Carolina and High-A Wisconsin in his first pro season.

NFL

The Detroit Lions visit the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 1:00 game today. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been added to the team’s COVID-19 list, and will not play this afternoon. Backup Mason Rudolph is expected to start for Pittsburgh, with Dwayne Haskins as backup. Roethlisberger has been vaccinated, and can return if he tests negative two times, 24 hours apart.

The Lions will be without kicker Austin Seibert today, and for the next several weeks. Siebert was placed on injured reserve Saturday, because of a hip injury. Ryan Santoso will fill in.

The Green Bay Packers will host the Seattle Seahawks in a 4:25 game today. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been cleared to return from the COVID-19 list, and will be available.
