Area Schools Hosting Veterans Day Programs

Many American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts are waiting until this weekend to hold their Veterans Day programs. United States Representative General Jack Bergman will be on hand in Hubbell on Saturday. Several of those dinners have already sold out, but there are options today at area school districts.

Houghton and Dollar Bay begin their programs at 11:11 AM. Seating is limited due to COVID-19 protocols so you are encouraged to reserve your spot beforehand if possible. Students from elementary school through grade 12 will read essays on the value of democracy, preserved overseas thanks to the extraordinary sacrifices of the veterans in attendance. Poems and patriotic music will round out the programs, along with a playing of taps.

Hancock will wait until the afternoon. American Legion Post 186 will present the colors. Middle School teacher Jeff Hauswirth is a veteran and he will speak to students about the history of the holiday. That will be followed by a talk from state Representative Greg Markkanen. Once Markkanen has completed his remarks he will let district students participate in a question and answer session. Community members are encouraged to attend at the Hancock Central High School gymnasium. The ceremony starts at 2:30.
