Holidays alter government meeting schedule

The meeting schedule for several Houghton governmental bodies will be altered in the coming months due to the holiday season. The Planning Commission traditionally convenes the fourth Tuesday of each month with City Council gathering the second and fourth Wednesday.

Next Wednesday is the second public engagement session regarding the downtown parking deck and what a replacement should look like. It will once again be held at the Bonfire Restaurant. That is intended to replace one council meeting in November. The group will meet on the 17th rather than during the week of Thanksgiving for the other one.

For December the council has two sessions, both bumped up by one week. They will meet on the 1st and 15th, both are Wednesdays. The Planning Commission will gavel in on November 16th and December 14th. All meetings begin at 5:30 PM.

Houghton City Council is looking for a new member to replace Dan Salo, who voluntarily stepped down last month to enjoy a winter home outside of the area. Qualifications are listed as such in the City Charter: “Any qualified voter of the city 18 years of age, or older, and a continuous resident of the City for 12 months immediately preceding the date of election, and not in default thereto shall be eligible to hold the office of Councilman.”

Applications are available at the clerk’s office inside City Center on Shelden Avenue. They need to be completed and returned by Friday, November 12th. The City Council will review and select Salo’s replacement at the November 17th meeting.

The Houghton – Portage Township Board of Education meeting has been moved up to November 9th this month. They will interview for the superintendent opening. Doreen Kramer is leaving the post at the end of the year.
