In high school hockey last night…
– Calumet stunned Houghton 3-2.
– L’Anse lost to Kingsford 6-1.
In boys’ high school basketball last night…
– Calumet took over second place in the WestPAC with a 45-39 victory over L’Anse. The Copper Kings opened up a double-digit lead in the third period. The Purple Hornets closed the gap to three points in the closing minutes, but Calumet held on for the win. L’Anse’s Brett Mattson led all scorers with 12 points. Jack Hyrkas scored 11 for the Kings.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with an 83-51 win over Ewen-Trout Creek. Brett Poissant scored 29 for Lake Linden. Tyler Roose passed Dan Short to become the Lakes’ all-time leading scorer. He now has 1,228 points in his career.
– Jeffers got past Watersmeet 60-55.
– Chassell downed Ontonagon 67-56.
– Baraga defeated Dollar Bay 75-64.
In girls’ action tonight, Hancock plays at L’Anse in a game that was postponed from last Thursday.
Finlandia
The result of the Finlandia men’s basketball game against Northland International University last night was not reported. Both Finlandia teams host Gogebic Community College tonight. The women’s game starts at 5:30, and the men’s game at 7:30 at the Paavo Nurmi Center. It’s the final game of the season for the men’s team.
Finlandia University is offering more than a dozen youth athletic camps, beginning in March and running through the middle of August. The schedule includes baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball and football camps led by Finlandia University coaches and players. NHL – Red Wings Visit Chicago
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Chicago tonight. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. The Wings have brought Teemu Pulkkinen back up from Grand Rapids. Pulkkinen is the American Hockey League’s leading scorer.
NBA – Pistons Off for All-Star Break
The Pistons return from the all-star break when they host the Bulls Friday night.
