Transfer station theft leads to employee resignations

An investigation is ongoing by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department concerning an employee arrangement to take scrap metal from the transfer station and sell it for personal gain.

Several loads were transported utilizing the individual’s vehicle, including the use of a trailer, violating an agreement with an independent company for removal and payment tied to scrap metal. The employee in question says he had permission from the facility supervisor.

According to Friday’s press release, Sheriff Josh Saaranen says that one transfer station worker has been fired and two others have resigned in connection with the matter. No money has been returned to the county.
