Houghton council member steps down

Wednesday night marked the final Houghton City Council meeting for Dan Salo. Chief of Police John Donnelly, City Manager Eric Waara, and several other members paid tribute to him throughout the session. Mike Needham used part of his closing remarks to address Salo.

I saw your wife sitting there when I came in and I was like, “What is going on? Did he get in trouble?”

The lighthearted tone was consistent throughout. When Robert Megowan reminded the body that it had been a while since Houghton and Hancock councils held a joint meeting, COVID was brought up. A joke was made that they could have it outside. Salo was happy to point out that winter was nearly here.

Megowan: Maybe we could meet outside someplace. *Laughter* Salo: Boy, I’m glad I’m leaving!

The council has 30 days to find Salo’s replacement and Joan Suits said that would be more difficult next month than most.

It sounds like we have one meeting until the vacancy has to be filled. So, could potentially anybody applying for the job be willing to show up and say a few words at the next council meeting?

The person chosen would serve until November 2022. Voters in next fall’s election will select someone for a full term.

An email from the City of Houghton details the requirements to become a council member:
