State Christmas tree being harvested Saturday

Maybe you are ready to skip Halloween and Thanksgiving, and proceed straight to Christmas. Saturday is the first opportunity, if you are willing to make a short trip. The Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget selected a blue spruce in Marenisco as the state’s Christmas tree, which will be harvested over the weekend.

The ceremony is set to have more pomp and circumstance than even Santa Claus could wish for. School bands from Watersmeet, Wakefield-Marenisco, and Ironwood will all provide music. Remarks are expected from Marenisco Township Supervisor Bruce Mahler, representatives of the Great Lakes Timber Association, and the Offices of state Senator Ed McBroom, and United States Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow.

The festivities are scheduled for 8:30 AM. After the tree is harvested, it will be bound and transported to the lawn of the Capitol building in Lansing. The tree is to be set in place by a crane and local Boy Scouts will ceremonially untie it. Utility companies are sponsoring professional decorations to be unveiled at the Silver Bells in the City celebration on November 19th. For the next five weeks, residents from across the state will travel to Lansing to marvel at a small piece of Upper Peninsula majesty.
