Kings, Lakes Cruise to Football Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football Saturday…
• Calumet defeated Houghton 31-7. Playing on a sprained ankle, Paul Sturos threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Carter Kilpela. Dryden Nelson ran for three scores, and Tom Erkkila booted a 37-yard field goal. Houghton’s lone score was an 88-yard reception by Kade Farrell. The Copper Kings improve to 5-2, and host Hancock Friday. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell overwhelmed Carney-Nadeau 52-14. The Lakes did all their scoring in the first half. Danny Marcotte capped a five-play, 59-yard opening drive with an 11-yard run. After a Wolves fumble, Ben Tampas scored on a one-yard run. Carney moved the ball into Lakes’ territory on its next possession, but James Milkey intercepted a Peyton Imhoff pass and returned it 77 yards for a score. The Lakes added a 12-yard scoring run by Travis Ongie, a 16-yard romp by Milkey, and a three-yard run by Mason Holzberger. After sacking Imhoff at his own two yard line following a bad snap on a punt attempt, Sam Roberts scored Lake Linden’s final touchdown on a two-yard plunge. After an impromptu warm-up at halftime, Lake Linden played the second half using mostly reserves and junior varsity players. Imhoff completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kienen Kuntze, and ran 42 yards for another score to put the Wolves on the board. Carney Nadeau suited up just 11 players for the game, and lost two to injury during the first half. Lake Linden raises its record to 5-2. The Lakes will host Forest Park Saturday. In high school volleyball Saturday…
• Houghton took second place at the Escanaba Elks Invitational. The Gremlins defeated Stephenson and Menominee in pool play, and split with Escanaba. Houghton downed Negaunee 2-0 (25-22, 25-15) in the semifinals, before falling 2-0 (24-26, 15-25) to Sault Ste. Marie in the championship match. Stella Wickstrom had 18 kills and 11 blocks. Meghan Trewhella had 16 kills. Micaela Geborkoff had 10 aces and 47 assists while Jiani Tang had 63 digs on the day.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell at the Bark River Tournament – no report.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep of 13th-ranked Wisconsin with a 5-1 victory Saturday night. The Huskies pounced early, with goals from Trenton Bliss, Alec Broetzman and Tyrone Bronte in the first period, and tallies by Parker Saretsky and Logan Pietila in the second. The Badgers’ only goal against Blake Pietila came in the third period. Pietila turned in 21 saves.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team completed a sweep of St. Thomas with an 8-3 victory Saturday night.

College Football

Drew Wyble’s 26-yard field goal as time expired lifted the MTU football team to a 30-27 victory over Wayne State Saturday. The kick ended a final drive that covered 76 yards in 14 plays. It was Wyble’s third field goal of the game. Will Ark completed 16 of 40 passes for 139 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. William Marano ran for 73 yards and a score.

The NMU football squad couldn’t overcome an early deficit, and lost at Davenport University 18-13 Saturday.

The Finlandia University football team dropped a 41-20 decision to Minnesota-Morris Saturday. Isaiah Roberson ran for two touchdowns for the Lions, and Jaheim Hooks scored once.

College Soccer

Both Finlandia University soccer teams earned victories at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa Saturday.

The men’s squad gave up two first half goals, the roared from behind in the second half to claim a 3-2 win. Wandile Ngwenya scored twice for the Lions, including the game-winner in the 78th minute. Mohamed Koroma scored once.

Ally Herrick’s goal late in the first half women’s team was the only score, as the women’s team claimed a 1-0 win. Herrick’s tally came on the Lions’ only shot on goal during the game. Aspen Wallen made nine saves in net for Finlandia.

The Michigan Tech soccer team will host Wisconsin-Parkside today at noon.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team won its seventh straight match Saturday, sweeping Northern Michigan 3-0 (27-25, 25-13, 25-18). Anna Jonynas had 16 kills and 10 digs. Laura De Marchi contributed 36 assists.

MLB

In the National League Divisional Series Saturday…
• The Atlanta Braves shot down the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0. Brandon Woodruff gave up all three Atlanta runs over six innings, and took the loss. That series is tied 1-1, and will continue Monday in Atlanta.
• The Los Angeles Dodgers bombed the San Francisco Giants 9-2. That set is also tied 1-1, and will continue Monday in L-A.

After a day off Saturday, the American League Divisional Series continue today…
• The Chicago White Sox host the Houston Astros. Houston leads the series 2-0.
• The Boston Red Sox entertain the Tampa Bay Rays. That set is tied 1-1.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 3-1 loss at Buffalo Saturday. Sam Gagner scored Detroit’s only goal. Alex Nedeljkovic made 35 saves. The Wings begin their regular season at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, the broadcast will begin at 7:15 on KBear 102.3.

In NFL action today…
