State Superintendent visits CCISD

State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice visited six different Copper Country Intermediate School District member facilities today. He began his tour at E. B. Holman School in Stanton Township, where he read to a first grade classroom and then was taken on a tour by three middle school students.

It is Rice’s first trip to the area, one that had been scheduled in spring of 2020 before COVID-19 shut down instruction statewide. He made only small changes to the itinerary, says CCISD Executive Secretary Loret Roberts, and the adjustments were aimed at seeing more students.

Rice thinks it is important to allow local districts to determine what is in the spotlight.

Mostly what I want to do is to see what they would like to show me, so that I get a sense of what they view as important, what they view as points of pride, and by extension, what they view as things they would like to see improved.

At Holman there is a garden and an orchard, plus an active beehive. Rice was gifted a jar of locally produced honey and marveled at the electric fence designed to keep deer and bears away. Holman has 15 acres of land, with its own disc golf course. It is a different setting than most schools Rice is familiar with.

He also visited the Career and Technical Education Center in Hancock, had lunch at Hancock High School, went to CLK Schools and wrapped up his trip at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Schools.
