Bikers will be on the road for a good cause Monday evening. The 8th Annual Ride Against Abuse is a community awareness event for the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home held early in October, coinciding with the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Few things raise awareness like a convoy of Harleys roaring in unison on the open road.
Executive Director Mary Niemela says they will leave the AmercInn in Calumet at approximately 6:20 after a ceremony to mourn victims of abuse. The group caravan will take US-41 through Hancock, across the bridge, and end at Kestner Waterfront Park next to Chutes n’ Ladders in Houghton. Niemela says the event has been a success from the beginning.
Commuters should be aware of the ride, as a police escort will be slowing traffic.
Niemela says that October sees a spike in interest from the general community regarding the shelter, but the needs of abuse victims exist year round.
