Calumet School District purchases new snow removal equipment

At last week’s Calumet-Lauirum-Keweenaw Board of Education meeting, the district approved the purchase of a front loader and a tractor to help with snow removal. Superintendent Chris Davidson says the first buy replaces an existing asset, but the tractor is something new.

The tractor was one of those things that we put off forever because financially we weren’t there to do it, but the need was always there. Jobs that would normally take two people, one in a pickup with a plow and the other person with a snow blower and a shovel. Now we can do it with just one on the tractor.

The district handles snow removal with its own personnel, rather than contracting out to private companies. Given Calumet’s prolific snowfall, it makes more sense to keep things in-house, even after expensive equipment purchases. Davidson says CLK has to work closely with Calumet Township and the Department of Public Works during the winter period.

For years now we’ve had our reserve spaces, where we put snow, where we can pile it up. We also truck a lot of snow.

The district also passed a one-time COVID benefit for staff and teachers, made possible by assistance from the federal government through stimulus bills passed in the last year.
