Houghton County COVID cases well below year ago levels

Houghton County has been downgraded from high COVID-19 transmission, and is verging on further plunging into the moderate category, defined as 50 cases per 100,000 people. The number of infections fell by over 50 percent for the seven-day period ending on September 8th, with the caveat that reporting rates tend to dip over long holiday weekends like Labor Day. With just 19 cases, it marks Houghton’s best tally since early August. Whereas Houghton is averaging less than three cases per day, at this time in 2020 that number was in double figures.

Baraga and Keweenaw Counties are not faring quite as well, with 28 and five cases respectively. The full chart is below.

The generally positive news comes as President Joe Biden announces he is directing OSHA to create a new rule mandating businesses with over 100 employees to force their workers to get vaccinated or the companies would be subject to substantial fines. The Copper Country has mostly missed out on COVID surges last spring and so far in the late summer, even with some of the lowest vaccination levels in the State of Michigan.
