MTU’s Watson Suspended; Stelzer, Sweeney, Richie Honored
Michigan Tech basketball player Ben Stelzer has been named the GLIAC North Men’s Player of the Week. Stelzer scored a career-high 37 points in the Huskies’ game against Northern Michigan last week, During Tech’s victory at Grand Valley on Saturday, he broke Tech’s all-time record for three-point shots, and moved up to eighth on the all-time MTU career scoring list.

Jillian Ritchie of the Huskies was named GLIAC North Division Women’s Player of the Week. Richie scored a career-high 23 points at Ferris State last Thursday.

Michigan Tech hockey defenseman Cliff Watson has been suspended for one game by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The suspension is a result of Watson’s penalty for contact to the head during the Huskies’ victory over Bemidji State on Saturday. At the time, referees assessed only a two-minute minor penalty. Michigan Tech’s next game is Friday, at Alaska-Anchorage.

Michigan Tech hockey defenseman Riley Sweeney has been named named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week. Sweeney scored his first two goals of the season, and was named Winter Carnival MVP in Tech’s sweep of Bemidji State.

Finlandia Splits at Rochester
At the Rochester Classic in Rochester, Michigan, the Finlandia women’s basketball team defeated the host team 85-66. Brierra Ruska-Pasanen led the Lions with 20 points. Marissa Burke added 19, and grabbed 12 rebounds. The Finlandia men’s team lost to Rochester 71-49. Brandon Robinson scored 14 for the Lions.

NHL – Red Wings Prep for Penguins
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Pittsburgh tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons visit Hornets
The Pistons visit the Hornets tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

MLB – Martinez Surgery Today
Detroit Tigers’ designated hitter Victor Martinez will undergo surgery today on his injured knee. Martinez’ recovery time will depend on the extent of the repair necessary on his torn cartilage. The best-case scenario is six to eight weeks… the worst-case is six months.
