In boys’ high school basketball Friday night…
– Calumet edged Jeffers 50-46 in overtime. Jack Hyrkas scored a career-best 31 points. Brant Ryynanen scored 12 for the Jets.
– Houghton outscored Ewen-Trout Creek 76-58.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten, with an 87-60 victory over Ontonagon.
– L’Anse stopped Hancock 61-39. All nine L’Anse players scored, led by Cody Clement with 11 points. Jared Peryam of the Bulldogs scored 19.
– Chassell fell to Republic-Michigamme 62-51.
– Baraga defeated Dollar Bay 55-43.
MTU Sweeps Winter Carnival Series
The fifth-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team opened the annual Winter Carnival series with a 3-1 victory over Bemidji State Friday night. Riley Sweeney started the scoring with his first goal of the season in the first period. Dylan Steman scored the game-winner in the third period, and Tanner Kero added a late empty-netter.
On Saturday, Kero scored the game-winner in the third period, as the Huskies edged the Beavers 2-1. Sweeney scored his second goal of the weekend. The win guaranteed home ice advantage in the opening round of the WCHA playoffs for the first time in 22 seasons.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to 11 games Saturday, with a 57-41 victory at Grand Valley State. Morgan Anderson led a balanced Huskies’ attack with 12 points. The Tech men’s team opened an early lead, and cruised to a 71-60 win over the Lakers. Ben Stelzer scored 29 for the Huskies.
NMU Hockey Falls at Duluth
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost a 3-1 decision at seventh-ranked Minnesota-Duluth Friday night. On Saturday, the Wildcats fell behind early, and lost 6-3.
The Northern Michigan University basketball team scored just 14 points in the first half, then roared back to beat Ferris State 79-74 in overtime Saturday. The men’s team upset the 17th-ranked Bulldogs 73-71. Chavis Mattison’s lay-up with five seconds remaining provided the winning margin.
Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost 4-2 at Marian University Saturday night. Brandon Passley and James Devlin scored for the Lions. Those teams play in Fond du Lac again today.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 4-1 at Concordia-Wisconsin Saturday. Sara Martin scored the Lions’ only goal, Finlandia skates at Marian University this afternoon.
Both Finlandia basketball teams are at the Rochester Classic in Rochester, Michigan. Both Lions teams will face Alfred State College today, and Rochester College tomorrow.
GLHL – Wolverines Short at Mosinee
The Calumet Wolverines lost 7-4 at Mosinee Friday night. Logan Rastello scored twice for Calumet. The result of the Wolverines’ game against the Monroe Blues Saturday night was not reported. The Portage Lake Pioneers had the weekend off.
NHL – Red Wings Outshoot Coyotes
The Detroit Red Wings took over first place in the NHL Atlantic Division Saturday night with a 3-1 victory over Phoenix. Petr Mrazek made 22 saves for Detroit. Tomas Tatar had a goal and two assists. The Wings skate at Pittsburgh Wednesday night. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Welcome Wolves
The Pistons host the Timberwolves tonight. Tip-off is at 6:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Barneløpet Set for Today
The annual Barneløpet children’s Nordic ski event will be held on the Maasto Hiihto trails today. Kids ages three through 17 are invited to participate. Register at 1:00 at the Chalet in Hancock. Races divided by age group will begin at 2:00, followed by the awards ceremony and snacks. For full details and registration information, click here.
